PORTUGAL FROM NORTH TO SOUTH

More than a road. A journey across Portugal.

Portugal's Estrada Nacional 2 is often called the country's Route 66, running from Chaves in the north to Faro in the Algarve. From the saddle, it becomes a close-up view of mountain country, wooded hills, historic towns and quiet inland roads.

The scenery shifts day by day: northern climbs, vineyard country, the wide Alentejo and, eventually, the Atlantic light of the Algarve. Coffee stops and time off the bike matter too, giving the group space to enjoy the places between each stage.

Ride With Pete takes care of the route and practical details. You can concentrate on riding well, looking around and reaching Faro with the people who shared the week.

A small group, riding together

Ride the N2 With Confidence

Pete is on the bike beside the group, not disappearing up the road. He knows the stages, the quieter stretches and the cafés worth stopping for, so the week can adapt to the riders and conditions without feeling rushed.

With a maximum of eight riders, there is time to regroup, talk over coffee and share the road properly. An experienced driver looks after luggage and planned meeting points while the group rides.

  • Pete Rides Every Kilometre
Riding every stage lets Pete see how the week is affecting each rider. He can offer encouragement, adjust the pace sensibly and help the group stay together.
  • An Experienced Support Driver
The driver has completed multiple tours in this role and keeps the practical side running smoothly, from luggage transport to having the right things ready at planned stops.
  • Planned Support Stops
The vehicle moves ahead to agreed meeting points where riders can refill, regroup and carry on without hauling luggage or unnecessary equipment.
  • Help on a Difficult Day
If someone cannot complete a stage, the vehicle may be available, subject to its limited passenger capacity. It is a sensible fallback rather than an alternative to riding the route.
  • Riding Together
This is a shared challenge, not a race. The group rides at a sustainable pace, with room for the scenery, cafés and conversations that give the week its character.

Essential Tour Facts

The official N2 runs for 739 km from Chaves to Faro. With short diversions for accommodation and daily logistics, riders should expect to cover approximately 741 km during the tour. Approximately 9,000 m of climbing makes this a serious ride, but the challenge is approached one day at a time, so you can prepare well and arrive ready to enjoy the journey.

Four confirmed departures run in 2027: 21–28 April, 26 May–2 June, 22–29 September and 5–12 October. The tour has seven riding days and a usual moving speed of approximately 21–24 km/h. Groups are limited to eight riders, and a departure is guaranteed once five riders have booked.

From the northern mountains to the Algarve

One Road. A Country in Constant Change.

The N2 leaves the higher roads of northern Portugal and works south through river country, central forests and historic towns. The horizons then open across the Alentejo before the road reaches the Algarve and Faro. Each stage has a different rhythm, and feeling those changes from the bike is one of the route's quiet rewards.

A challenge worth preparing for

Is This N2 Tour Right for You?

This is a demanding week, and you should arrive reasonably fit, used to long days and comfortable riding on consecutive days. You do not need racing speed, but you do need to prepare and respect the distance and climbing.

The usual moving speed is approximately 21–24 km/h, adjusted for the stage, terrain and conditions. Suitable e-bikes are welcome, with batteries charged each night at the accommodation.

Determination, realistic fitness and a willingness to ride with the group matter more than being the fastest cyclist on the road.

What riders need to bring

  • Know the basics of your own bike
  • Be ready to handle ordinary roadside issues, such as replacing an inner tube
  • Carry personal spares, including suitable inner tubes
  • Arrange appropriate travel and cycling insurance
  • Be willing to ride at a steady group pace

Basic tools and track pumps are carried for the group when required.

Local knowledge, shared from the bike

Ride the N2 With Someone Who Knows Portugal

Organising the N2 yourself means making hundreds of small decisions about routes, stops, luggage and what to do when a day does not go to plan. Pete has lived in Portugal since 2006, knows the roads from the saddle and takes care of those decisions with the driver.

Pete shares the riding rather than simply leading from the front.

That means local cafés, quieter roads, flexibility when the group needs it and familiar help when a bike or rider has a difficult moment. With a maximum of eight riders, there is time for conversation, encouragement and the friendships that grow naturally over a week on the road.

More Than Just Another Cycling Tour

The route is long enough to demand respect, but you do not have to solve every detail alone. Pete rides with the group while the driver handles luggage and planned stops, leaving you to concentrate on the road to Faro.

Seven days of riding become a goal the whole group works towards together.

If you can picture yourself at the Faro marker, view the planned tour dates or talk through your questions with Pete. A conversation is the simplest place to start.
